Can we expect a full premium Call of Duty release in 2023?
It's safe to say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is off to an incredible start. I mean, what else do you call it when a title manages to pass $1 billion (Yes, with a B) in two weeks? A hit, that's what! So, what is the next logical step when you have a monster title raking in as much cash as COD? Thinking about the next Call of Duty, of course.
In its latest release, Activision noted plans for a new, "full premium" Call of Duty game in 2023. Although, it's rumored this might only be an expansion to the current Modern Warfare II. I've still gotta say, Damn! Not two weeks after the release of MWII, we're already talking about another title?! Is it possible to OD on Call of Duty? Nah, I'm just kidding. I can't get enough. Although Activision previously mentioned there will be no mainstream COD title in 2023, maybe the taste of $1 Billion in two weeks has changed their minds?
Another perspective is that this "full premium" is just fancy wording for a $70 expansion that includes new single and multiplayer combat. This perspective makes the most sense to me. As much as I love me some COD, if Activision hasn't already begun working on a full release yet, and is doing so based solely on the sales of MWII, then that title will be rushed and sloppy. Secondly, they've already mentioned they don't plan to release another title, breaking a trend of new releases each year since 2005. Finally, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has lots of shelf life in it. It would make the most sense to try and squeeze an expansion out instead of creating a completely new title.
With that said, wouldn't it be great come November 2023 if we wake up and boom! Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare III is right there waiting? I wouldn't be mad at all, but until then, I'm not getting my hopes up, and besides, with Warzone 2.0 and Warzone Mobile coming out, we've got plenty to hold us over in the meantime.
