If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it - AutoChess Moba Quick Review

AutoChess Moba is an enjoyable spin on the multiplayer online battle arena genre, as seen in games like League of Legends and Dota 2. It may not be the most original game, but it tweaks the formula just enough to create something worth giving a shot.

TIME PLAYED

I played AutoChess Moba for two hours, during which I completed seven matches. Each match takes fifteen to twenty minutes to complete.

WHAT’S AWESOME

• Gameplay. AutoChess Moba features some elements that will be familiar to anyone who’s played a MOBA and a few that change the formula a little bit. One of my favorite tweaks on what I’m used to is AutoChess’s teleportation spell, which blends together the recall and teleport abilities from League of Legends and made it easy for me to return to base and get back out onto the battlefield.

• Character unlocks. AutoChess Moba features twenty-six characters that all vary in playstyle and design, and I found it easy to unlock new heroes and fill out my roster. It took me two hours to acquire almost half of the available characters by simply playing. It might not be as user-friendly as Dota 2, where all characters are unlocked from the start, but it’s definitely better than earning heroes in most mobile MOBAs.

• Aesthetic. I absolutely loved AutoChess Moba’s graphics, environment and character design for its sleek and eye-catching look. Even the user interface and menu layout give off a sense of polish.

• Controls. AutoChess Moba features a simple, comfortable, and customizable HUD. It’s not always easy to translate complex games like MOBAs to mobile, so I appreciated this game’s responsiveness and ease of navigation.

WHAT SUCKS

• Balance. In my first half-dozen or so matches, AutoChess Moba jumped back and forth from feeling like a breeze when I played a stronger character to struggling tremendously whenever I wanted to try someone new but unproven. Every MOBA has a constant push and pull of nerfs and buffs as characters are added and changed via patches, but this one could definitely use some work in that respect as soon as possible.

SHOULD YOU PLAY IT?

Yes. AutoChess Moba is a terrific MOBA experience. The straightforward progression system makes acquiring characters less of a grind than it is in some MOBA titles. And although the inspiration from other games is obvious, AutoChess Moba mixes those familiar elements together in a way that anyone who appreciates the MOBA genre as much as I do should enjoy.
