Delivering packages in a retro dungeon crawl - UnderDungeon Quick Review

PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play it, but only if you like retro games. I had a blast with UnderDungeon thanks to its nostalgic gameplay and visuals. Although I’m not a huge fan of dungeon crawlers, UnderDungeon entertained me enough that I’d like to give more of these games a try.
TIME PLAYED
I played UnderDungeon for three and a half hours. Each quest took me at least thirty minutes to complete, with harder quests increasing in length as well as challenge.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• Narrative. I always love it when games make me chuckle, especially in the most serious situations. UnderDungeon’s rich narrative kept me entertained and wanting to know more about this peculiar world of monsters and dangerous package delivery. The jokes can be a little corny, but they were hilarious enough to pull me in much longer than I’d anticipated.
• Gameplay. UnderDungeon provides a classic, fun dungeon crawler experience filled with all sorts of monsters, traps, and quests to overcome. Every time I thought I’d seen it all and killed every monster possible, UnderDungeon always surprised me with new twists.
• Aesthetic. Although UnderDungeon’s art style might not appeal to everyone, I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the old games I used to play as a kid on PC emulators. The music’s pretty freakin’ good too.
WHAT SUCKS
• Crashes. UnderDungeon crashed in the middle of a battle around thirty minutes in. It crashed again when I was trying to purchase something from a merchant after an hour. Those were the only two crashes I encountered, but two crashes in less than four hours of play is a little concerning. I’m glad the game automatically saved my progress, or I’d have had an unpleasant grind back up to where I left off to look forward to.
• Disturbing blinking. One of the ways UnderDungeon emphasizes emotion is by rapidly inverting black and white hues across certain visual elements. Unfortunately, the game abuses this clever idea to the point that it became annoying and, in some cases, blinding.
