What twisted this fairytale dreamland into such a psychotic nightmare of hunt or be hunted?

In 1927, with her father’s passing and the family finances in tatters, the protagonist left her childhood home in order to find a job to support herself. The protagonist managed to land a position as an orderly in a mental institute. Oddly enough, she found most of the patients there seemed to suffer from a compulsive roaming disorder in which they believed they were trapped in a distorted dreamland. To truly help them, the protagonist had to get to the bottom of their troubled minds by literally going there.

However, repeated visits to this strange dreamland only yielded more  questions than answers. For one thing, how were all the patients going to the  exact same place? Why, according to her pocket watch, did time seem to be  frozen at 7:15? What twisted this fairytale dreamland into such a psychotic  nightmare of hunt or be hunted?
