SHOULD I PLAY WIZARD WITH A GUN?
Play it. Wizard with a Gun mixes the resource-collecting and monster-fighting of sandbox survival gameplay with a complex system of spell upgrading and equipment enhancing. Outside of a bland tutorial, everything else in this game feels irresistibly good.
TIME PLAYED
I played Wizard with a Gun for four hours. I’ve defeated the first boss and am trying to beat the second boss. I’ve built nearly every research table and I’m currently close to maxing out my poison and ice spells.
WHAT’S AWESOME ABOUT WIZARD WITH A GUN?
• Shooting monsters. Battling enemies across this world felt fantastic and challenging. Some monsters were easier to beat while others had me dodging and shooting for ages. There was always a tough opponent somewhere on the map I could try to defeat to make more progress and that challenge kept pushing me forward. The range of different elemental bullets and upgrades offered a lot of flexibility around the way I played, which made my adventures even more rewarding.
• Decorating the perfect tower. I used the resources I collected while out exploring to build walls and doors or upgrade my tower floors. The tower served as a safe haven for me to enhance spells or replenish health, but I could also decorate it however I wanted for both aesthetic and utilitarian reasons.
• Customizing my wizard. From hats to vests to pretty boots, I liked the range of clothing choices I could pick from in Wizard with a Gun. I personally chose to dress my wizard as a court jester. If I ever got tired of that look, though, I could always change my outfit via the sewing mechanic.
• An enchanting look. I’ve followed this game’s development for the past few months because of its unique look. The game features a cartoony yet dark approach to fantasy, where the characters and environments carry a mix of bold and dull colors and a lot of heavy black outlining. It all looks very beautiful combined and set into motion.
WHAT SUCKS ABOUT WIZARD WITH A GUN?
• Learning the mechanics. Wizard with a Gun’s tutorial provided all the details I need to traverse this magical world, but learning them felt boring. While the information was clear and comprehensive, it was never delivered in a fun or engaging way. I would have appreciated less text boxes and more learning by doing.
