I am not the biggest fan of Star Wars, having only watched the most recent three movies, so there aren't many nostalgia blinders here. Star Wars: Hunters is a free-to-play team shooter with standard free-to-play mechanics, like a season pass for cosmetics, numerous challenges, and a ranked mode. I played it for roughly four hours, and while it was initially engaging, the novelty wore off without a dedicated team. Matches often felt too one-sided, detracting from what could have been a very enjoyable team-based PvP shooter.
In Star Wars: Hunters, you choose from characters fitting the trinity archetypes of damage, support, and tank. Each character has unique abilities and an ultimate that can turn the tides of battle. The game modes include deathmatch and capture points, and as you play, you unlock cosmetics and new characters from the free season pass. The variety in gameplay and progression keeps the game engaging initially.
A highlight is that every character can be unlocked for free. In my four hours of play, I unlocked seven out of thirteen characters. Combat feels unique depending on the character, and none felt overly dominant, though some were more useful. Controller support is a welcome addition, enhancing the experience. The ability to unlock characters without spending money adds depth and longevity to the game.
However, the game has several drawbacks. Nothing felt overly impactful, including ultimates. As a solo player, I didn't feel the need to coordinate with my team, often roaming the map looking for the next enemy to take out. Matches lacked a sense of progress. The leveling system for each character, which provides buffs, felt unnecessary and sometimes unfair. The limited game modes quickly became repetitive. Adding modes like capture the flag or payload maps would add much-needed diversity. The lack of impactful moments and repetitive nature of the game modes can make the experience feel monotonous. While character balancing is generally good, some tweaks are needed to ensure all characters are equally viable.
Overall, Star Wars: Hunters is a solid but not extraordinary game. It handles the PvP hero shooter genre well with a Star Wars theme. However, it lacks dynamic combat and varied game modes to keep things fresh. Despite its flaws, it's completely free to play, which is a significant plus. If you have a group of friends who enjoy Star Wars, this is a game you don’t want to miss. The game's strengths lie in its accessibility and character variety. The ability to unlock all characters without spending money is a significant advantage, making it approachable for casual players. The combat mechanics are solid, and the different playstyles add depth. However, for those seeking a more competitive and impactful experience, the game might fall short.
