Popular video game Fortnite will come back to iPhones in EU after a four-year absence.
Epic Games, Inc. is an American video game and software developer and publisher of massively popular game call Fornite which is now returning due to the new law in EU.
In 2020 Epic Games withdrew their hit game Fortnite from the App Store after disagreeing with Apple's policies.
Those who play this popular multiplayer battle-royale game can buy in-game items and character skins via the Fortnite currency V-Bucks.
That summer, Epic Games launched a new way for Fortnite players to purchase V-Bucks at a discount by bypassing Apple's App Store's in-app purchases and buying directly from Epic Games.
Apple had been accused of creating a monopoly, giving customers and developers no choice but to go through its own channels, and charging developers up to 30% commission.
It has meant that developers who either fail to meet Apple's standards for being on the App Store, or do not wish to pay its fees, are excluded from the millions of people who use Apple gadgets.In Fortnite's X post, it also wrote: "Shoutout DMA - an important new law in the EU making this possible."
Now, thanks to the EU's DMA, Epic Games can distribute an official iPhone app through alternative iOS app stores and avoid Apple's in-app purchase cut without breaking the company's App Store policies.
But Apple must allow its customers to access alternative app stores on iOS devices purchased in the EU from March.
